VINTAGE PHOTOS

VINTAGE PHOTOS

Vintage is in style. Or, what is modern is old. We were looking for something with the flavour of yesteryear for today’s post, and we came upon a website that has launched a fascinating initiative, especially for those of us who are inspired by anything old, by bygone eras and fashions. It is a vast community in which surfers from all over the world share their old photographs, be they family portraits, curious images or suggestive pin-ups. It is a delight to browse through all these photos, most of them in black and white or sepia with the look of old paper, and be spirited back into the past. Seeing the fashions, the gestures, the sets… Guessing about the lives of the subjects in each of the images. Laughing to see the contrasts with the present. There are true gems more than a century old! And that huge jumble that is Internet has become the new photo album for all these anonymous images that would have otherwise fallen into oblivion.

Snowdoll

SNOWDOLL

Are we complaining about the cold? But it’s only been winter for a few days! Thoughts about sandals and flavour of the sea are forbidden. Winter holds its own alternative delight. Look inside yourself for that hankering to head to the mountains to make a snowman. And instead if you find your hibernating instinct, with the temptation to sit down and wait until spring comes, get inventive! Don a pretty scarf, a fun hat and go out for a walk, a trip, an outing to the snow.

Today we suggest a collection to help you feel like a snowman: Snowdoll. White and black, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, bags, wallets… Fun ideas to give away or to keep your body and soul warm and toasty.

Welcome, winter. We love you, too.

Your city, with other eyes

YOUR CITY, WITH OTHER EYES

How’s my relationship with my city? After many years, I am very fond of it and I’d never exchange it for another, but I have to admit that it doesn’t thrill me the way it did the first few months…

If something tells you that the time has come to move, travel or rediscover your city, don’t hesitate to check the amazing travel guides published by Lecool, all of them designed by locals in the know.

Madrid, Amsterdam, London, Lisbon and Barcelona in an independent, carefully chosen selection of nooks, secrets and sins. Places whose existence we might have suspected but didn’t know how to get to. To fall in love all over again…

In short, our thanks to le cool for cheering up our Thursdays with its online magazine, and now, too, for skilfully ushering us through our city with its guides.

Suggested by… you

SUGGESTED BY… YOU

We’re going to try to get you to suggest topics for this blog. Let’s see how we’re going to accomplish this:

Every now and then surely you’ve left the movie theatre with a floating, unreal sensation and for days scenes from the movie replay in your mind. Other times, not very often either, sure you’ve been reading a book, devouring it like it was your first novel, and when you finish it you feel ridiculously empty. It’s also rare, although it does happen, that while walking around a city other than your own you enter a café and without meaning to you get trapped there for hours because of its cosiness, the people or that authentic something that certain places have.

So, the next time something similar happens you in a train, in a shop,on a street, with a landscape or with a catchprase or website… When something gets you excited or inspired, or makes you sigh, tell us about it! We promise that no matter how much we want to, we won’t keep it a secret.

Maybe right at this instant something has occurred to you that you’d like to share with others. Jot it down before you lose it and send it to blog.ws@womensecret.com

Photos are welcome, too.

The Sartorialist

OUR INEFFABLE REFERENCE: THE SARTORIALIST

What is The Sartorialist?
A fashion blog and a bottomless source of inspiration for amateur designers from all over the world (it gets more than 23,000 hits per day).
What can you find there? Intensive street fashion with fantastic photographs and delightful comments from cities like Rio, N.Y., Moscow, Florence, Milan and Paris.
Who’s behind it? Scott Shuman, N.Y., 39 years old. He used to work in haute couture marketing (Valentino, Gaultier) and is now a journalist and photographer covering catwalks and sending posts to Style.com and his blog.

How did it start?
He began in September 2005 by taking pictures of people he thought were interesting.

Why do you like it?
He is a discerning, meticulous observer. He discovers the different ways of dressing stylishly outside the classic references (magazines, advertising, TV). He scrutinises real-life fashion: the woman running through the theatre aisle, the group chatting as they leave a catwalk, the painter at the exhibition, not just the one showing his works but also the one retouching the paint on the walls…

His goal?
“To capture the perfect look”

Give me that Finnish feeling

GIVE ME THAT FINNISH FEELING

Give me a view of the Northern Lights through the window. Give me an entire winter watching how the snow dances as it falls. Santa Claus, this Christmas I wish that you would lend me your house in Korvatunturi while you’re out there spreading happiness among children. I’ll wait for you with the fireplace stoked, some hot tea and a cotton lounge set printed with leaves a little berry-coloured polka-dots, everything very Nordic.

Finally, in case you’d like to give me the set too, it’s from womensecret.com’s Finland collection, and it looks cute with the matching lingerie, blanket, candles and Christmas tree ornaments… I like everything in the collection, really, you can’t go wrong.

Thank you very much (Kiitos Paljon)

Small fans of Felix the Cat

SMALL FANS OF FELIX THE CATS

Ready, steady, go! Watch Felix “the wonderful-wonderful cat” jumping and somersaulting around your house. KIDS by women’secret offers children aged 0 to 6 designs featuring Felix the Cat which, as always in our KIDS collection, match the women’secret garments for women. Children loving dressing like their mums…

Still, do you know where this adorable cat came from? Felix the Cat was the first animated character in a short film way back during the first decade of the 1900s! And even before becoming famous from his comics and cartoons, Felix played a key role in the history of television: the Felix figure was used to tune the black and white image of the first NBC broadcasts.

New Book from the Proyecto Cartele

NEW BOOK FROM THE PROYECTO CARTELE

The Proyecto Cartele is an archive of photographs taken by anonymous photographers and compiled by a group of former advertising professionals from Argentina. The images are taken from posters, adverts and messages on public thoroughfares found in the most godforsaken or at times the busiest places in the world. The messages are one-of-a-kind, shocking and almost always hilarious. As you page through one of these gems of a book, you also notice a cumulative-comic effect. You begin by smiling, and end up by cackling out loud. Now they’ve published their third volume, so this is the perfect chance to remember that you can have a look at it to brighten up your day. On their website you can see their immense archive (more than 15,000 photographs) which they have managed to compile thanks to hundreds of spontaneous contributions that are added to this project. Plus, you, too, can share your personal discoveries. Surprise yourself by walking through the streets with one eye out for treasures…
