Miffy at the museum

We all know that Holland is a great country, crisscrossed by canals, packed with coffee shops and blooming with tulips. But it may come as a surprise to learn that Miffy, the celebrity bunny rabbit, is also Dutch. Or rather, the creator of this cute bunny is Dutch. Dick Bruna is a world famous artist renowned for his simple, yet direct graphics.

Bruna created the first sketches of this character back in 1955, which ever since has been a reference for young and old alike. Sketches based on the imaginary adventures of a bunny rabbit that the artist used to tell his son at bedtime. Perhaps that’s why the tales are still so popular with tiny tots.

Miffy is an international phenomenon that illustrates books written in more than 40 languages and that has sold over 85 million copies. Not bad going! It probably explains why Utrecht’s Central Museum has decided to pay tribute to this artist with a retrospective exhibition of his work. This permanent exhibition includes sketches, ink drawings, posters, book covers and even documentaries.

Here at w’s we love Miffy because she’s cute and lots of fun. This season she’s featured in a collection that’s a touch more sober than previous ones. This time in black and white, the bunny rabbit is everywhere to be seen: on beach towels, bags, jumpsuits and pyjamas that double up as sleep and beach wear. If you like Miffy, then this is a collection for you.

The house of Dick Bruna is part of Utrecht’s Central Museum:
